May in numbers: TV

Above the Fold

1st June 2018

You would think sizzling temperatures and runners taking to the streets to train for the London Marathon would have affected viewing rates in April—the month from which the most recent British Audience Research Board (BARB) figures are available. Not for the BBC, who scored a win with an audience share of over 30 per cent for the month.

Helping the Beeb become the champions of TV is stalwart British soap EastEnders—which racked up 6.7 million viewers for a single episode. It seems like no matter how sunny it gets, nothing beats Albert Square. Except for Coronation Street, that is. In April EastEnders fell slightly short of its Manchester rival, as ITV’s flagship soap pull in 6.8 million viewers.

ITV might not have had the highest audience share overall, but did come out on top with Simon Cowell’s Britain’s Got Talent. The show locked in 8 million viewers for three of its episodes in April, beating the BBC by 1.3 million viewers.

Perhaps the birth of the new Prince of Cambridge heightened our love for all things British.
